1. Motivation and Reputation
They say you’re only as good as your last shoot. There’s a lot of truth in this. Unlike a shop you have no off the shelf product to sell. You are literally ‘selling yourself’. This is your reputation, and it needs to be looked after if you’re going to succeed.
This means you have to be on your best behavior at all times. The top supermodels may be able to get away with the paparazzi lifestyle, but while nurturing a modeling career this simply will not be the case if you hope to succeed.

2. Should I pay to sign up for a model agency?
North West Model Agency does not charge to sign up models. The choice is yours at the end of the day though it is worth thinking about a few points. What guarantee of modeling assignments do you have considering your outlay? This is known commercially as a “Return of Investment”. A return of investment of zero is not an investment at all.
Remember that YOU are the model agencies source of income. Placing you on assignments is how they are meant to make both you and them money. Simply put, it is a risk the modeling agency should be taking as business men and women, and not one which you should be underwriting.
Look at it another way, do football clubs charge potential Premier League players to sign up? If they did, what sort of statement would that make about the quality of the club or the quality of the players?
3. Should I do modeling shots for free?
Modeling is a very competitive business. The catch 22 situation which North West Model Agency sees all the time is a model wants to sign up for an agency to do modeling, but the agency wants to see example of work the model has done.

Having some sort of portfolio is a real advantage. Look at it from the other side of the fence. You have two models, both have the look you want and one has a set of photos showing you what they’re capable of.
All things being equal who would you pick? You would obviously go with the known quantity i.e. the one with the portfolio.
Having a portfolio is linked to point 3 above. It is pretty much essential, but you need to know your market. Most people will never be “high fashion” models. It’s something you need to accept. If you do not fit into the “sample” size it’s not going to happen.
North West Model Agency suggests that when you turn up for an interview, or are submitting photos remember to make sure they are the best you have and they are relevant.
Avoid using poor quality images at all times. North West Model Agency sees applicants using mobile phone images which are just not good enough.
Images should be clear and show you at your best. Unless it is a highly stylized image make sure your face is clear (no hands or hair in the way). Avoid submitting photos where you are in a group of people. Will the agency know which one you are? What if your friends are chosen by the agency? You would feel pretty stupid.
If you have a special feature (good skin, hands, legs, bottom etc) make sure you show it off subtly in the photo. Hiding an ‘asset’ will not get you work.
Sending in a poor quality photo or one which is not very well taken implies laziness on your part. It does not look good if an agency is considering whether it should invest time and money in promoting you.

5. Safety First
An obvious tip, but a lot of models (both men and women) do not always see the potential dangers involved in taking on an unknown assignment.
One of the advantages of using an agency (such as North West Model Agency) is the agency will have looked at the projected and made a call about its validity.
Using some of the free sites out there you can be left wide open to abuse as literally anyone could be posing to be a photographer. From simply not being paid (financial safety) to assault and worse (physical safety) it is always advisable to take someone with you, or at the very least let a relative or friend know where you are going and what time you are due back.
North West Model Agency always recommends a chaperone no matter what the project, age or sex of the model. This is not always possible but make sure you do not carry large amounts of cash (always take some for a taxi) and stick to well lit streets and car parks.

6. Punctuality
In the commercial world everything revolves around stability and relative predictability. It might not always seem like it to the outsider but think of simple things like you know the shops will open at 9am and your employer will pay you.
When organizing a shoot North West Model Agency guarantees there has usually been quite a lot of people and time involved. In business time is money, and turning up to an assignment late may mean not all the photography gets completed as planned in one day.
So what?
Well if the shoot time is doubled so can the price. Photographers and equipment do not come cheap – always bear in mind that being late is wasting someone else’s money and that someone else is the person who pays your wage be it directly or through an agency.
At the very least if you have relied on public transport call the person who has organized the shoot to let them know where you are and when you will arrive. In short, being late or not turning up is a really easy way for people not to use you. It will affect your reputation, your motivation and any future prospects of work.
7. Travel
Expect to travel while you’re a model. It’s part of the business. Being in the right place at the right time helps, but chances are you’ll be going up and down the country. If you’re lucky you may even travel abroad.
If using public transport make sure you check ahead to see if there are any strikes or problems.
If you’re driving, check your car is roadworthy and make sure you know where you can park on arrival and if there are any motorway delays.
“My car wouldn’t start” or “I couldn’t find anywhere to park” just will not wash if you disrupt a major shoot. North West Model Agency can help you plan your journey and in some cases even offer transport to the shoot and back.
When parking choose a well lit car park and remember that in winter it gets dark early. Do you want to be walking through an unfamiliar city at night? Regardless of gender, this is not fun let alone safe.
Never put your safety at risk to be punctual though. Always let someone know where you are and what time you are due back.
8. The assignment
As with just about every other industry communication is essential. Never take anything for granted.
Ask plenty of questions about the assignment and never do anything you are not comfortable with. Generally an assignment will have been planned for quite some time as it may be seasonal.

GLAMOR MODELING ADVICE AND MODEL TIPS: HOW CAN I LAUNCH MY GLAMOUR-MODEL CAREER?
Aspiring models often ask us, How do I get into modeling? Or, How do I get started in modeling? This article discusses the various types of modeling, and what it takes to make it in this challenging yet fun profession. You will also find some useful tips and advice on how to get started in teen modeling.
What are the different types of modeling?
There are basically five (5) different types of modeling. These are the broadest categories, with newer but smaller categories evolving all the time. Furthermore, these categories also overlap with each other at times.
1. COMMERCIAL MODELING (Television, Catalogs and Print-Ads):
Commercial models help promote products and services through ads in the electronic media such as Television and the Internet as well as through Print Advertising. They appear in commercials/ads, on product packaging, in magazines, on billboards, etc., and help promote all kinds of products and services ranging from computer equipment to medicines, apparel, shoes and cosmetics. This is by far the largest modeling and teen modeling category.
General Requirements for Commercial Modeling:
Contrary to popular belief, many successful commercial models look like normal, everyday people. If they walked past you on the street in normal everyday clothes and with little or no makeup, you would probably not look at them twice. However, what they do possess is the ability to express an emotion, and the ability to replicate that same look time and again. For starters, you can start practicing your best looks and poses in front of a mirror. Many successful models do 15 minutes of mirror work every day. Practice evoking different types of emotions through your expressions.
The ability to show different expressions, to be able to hold that expression so that the photographer can take multiple shots at different camera exposure settings, and the ability to create that expression again at will are all very useful qualities. The good news is that these qualities and talents can be developed. Good commercial models are also usually photogenic, but exceptions abound. Having a unique or different look is good but often not an absolute necessity. Personality, likeability (that the audience or target market can relate to), being internally happy (i.e., liking yourself – because it does show through in your images) and being able to work long hours while at the same time enjoying the process are other attributes that successful commercial models seem to possess.
Most pictures on magazine covers are touched up and air-brushed on the computer for hours (called digital editing) to create the right look. If you have reasonably good features, a great photographer can make you look like a superstar! Remember, the glamorous superstars do not always look that way in real life. It is the camera, lighting, makeup and digital editing that often does the trick.
2. PROMOTIONAL MODELING (Tradeshows, Retail, Car Shows, Events, etc.):
Promotional modeling includes work at Tradeshows and Conventions, handing out Product Samples in Retail Stores, helping promote products or services at Car Shows, Boat Shows, Events, etc. What differentiates Promotional Modeling from Commercial Modeling above is the fact that for Promotional Modeling you have to be there in person, because you yourself (not your photo or video) are doing the promoting. While it may not appear as glamorous as Commercial Modeling, it can provide good income opportunities, and the jobs are usually easier to get. Creative forms of Promotional Marketing (often referred to as Buzz Marketing) and Event Marketing are gaining fast in popularity. It seems to be a high-growth area, and compensation seems to be improving too.
General Requirements for Promotional Modeling:
Promotional Modeling is about overall personality, interpersonal skills, being able to establish a quick rapport, and staying focused on the task at hand. You may meet a lot of different people, albeit each very briefly. If you thrive on meeting people and enjoy the hustle and bustle of a tradeshow environment, Promotional Modeling is usually easier to break into than Commercial Modeling, although exceptions are always there. Even though the job is not primarily about being photographed, you will still want to look and act your best. Promotional/Event Modeling is a growing field.
3. FASHION MODELING (includes Runway, Fashion Shows, etc.):
Fashion models help launch new products and designs such as in apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, swimwear, beachwear, etc. The walk the runway in fashion shows. Many large fashion shows also get media coverage, and a good fashion model can get print exposure in leading fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, etc. Similarly, if a fashion show is being covered by the broadcast media, there is a chance that you may appear on Television too. Many industry-specific fashion shows such as shows for apparel and swimwear can hire hundreds or thousands of models at a time.
General Requirements for Fashion Modeling:
Up until a few years ago, a height of at least 5 feet 9 inches was considered pretty much a requirement for Fashion Modeling especially for the Runway (where you walk up and down a Runway, wearing clothes of a certain brand and/or designer). However, that is fast changing. Now, there are Fashion/Runway shows for pretty much all body types. If you feel good about your body, can walk confidently, and look reasonably good, chances are that you can find some opportunities in Fashion Modeling. For certain apparel and swimwear shows, a good well-proportioned body is more important than just height alone. Since, the shows can require hundreds of models per day (and there are just so many really tall good looking models around), you probably have a good chance of being selected as long as your overall body proportion is in harmony with the product line of the manufacturer. Then, of course, there are apparel and swimwear manufacturers who make clothes for petites and plus-sized customers as well.
4. INTERNET MODELING (web-sites, live webcam, etc.):
Internet modeling, whether it is for static content on web-sites or for live webcam or streaming video is a popular segment. Generally, you have to be over 18 years of age.
5. MODELING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS, CONTENT CREATORS & STOCK PHOTO AGENCIES:
Photographers hire models all the time, either to build their own portfolios or to create content for Licensing to others and/or for Stock-Photo purposes. The PhotoShoot can be either a paid shoot (where the model gets paid either on an hourly basis or a flat fee) or TFP (trade Time for Prints), or TFCD (trade Time for CD-ROM images). In the TFP or TFCD arrangement no money changes hands. It is just a trade or swap. The photographer invests his/her time, expertise and equipment, and the model invests his/her time. Thus, they can create some content together that both parties can use to further their own professional goals, respectively. Stock Photo Agencies sometimes commission a photographer to take certain pictures that can then be sold or licensed to different companies for use in advertising and marketing materials.
As you can see, there are myriad opportunities in the modeling world. However, it is hard work. Like most other things in life, there is no guarantee of success. It depends on your looks, luck, demeanor, personality, hard work, perseverance, and a burning desire to succeed, among other things.
Others before you have made it big in modeling, and you probably can too! 1. Think Like A Business, Not Like A “Starving Artist”. Create systems and consistent marketing campaigns to sell your “brand”.
2. Make No Assumptions. Don’t assume you need a top agent before one appears. Don’t assume that you booked that job because your audition was good. Don’t assume that what works for a fellow actor will work for you. Don’t assume that a movie star will be a good actor or vice versa. Just don’t assume. Stay alert and observe.
3. Hire The Best Coach/Mentor You Can Find To “Open Doors.” No one ever got there alone. Why would YOU be the exception? A Coach can personally refer you to an agent. Why waste 3 years sending out pictures/resumes? Duh!
4. Don’t Follow The Herd. Know what you want, what you’re selling and never give up. Don’t hang out with those who are unfocused, draining or negative. Go your own way.
5. Look For Opportunity Everywhere. Create your own work by finding top professionals- writers, producers, directors – and hire them to develop your projects. Everything is negotiable.
6. “Live The Part” of a successful actor (and Dress it)! You’ll get more roles. You become what you think and project.
7. Waste No Time. Know what you want and go for it. There’s no reason to cling to one area of the industry, one city, one agent. Stay in the moment, stay focused but keep moving forward.
8. Play Out YOUR Agenda, not someone else’s – director, producer, agent, manager or parents. It’s YOUR life not theirs.

We researchers are always thoughtful and have this strange habit (good/bad whatever you say) of forming an idea from every situation that comes across us. This time the focal point of my thinking is my wife Mrs.Michelle Smith, who has this habit of watching lots of Hindi movies and reading cinema centric magazines. Every time I would see her reading filmy magazines one or the other after finishing off her daily household chores. I don’t understand what these women gain by intervening into the private affairs of these artists. What to talk of them, even the media finds it pleasurable by creating big issues of their petty affairs. Each and every one of us is aware of the hotshot news on Rahul Mahajan( son of the deceased BJP member Pramod Mahajan) of brutally beating his wife “Dimpy Ganguly” . But how many of them know about the recent reserve rate hike by RBI or the profit growth revealed by ICICI BANK recently? Not many of them I can guarantee because almost every news channel had this stupid news aired on them.
Looking into the current mental state of the people, I thought why not to just start trading these artists by availing tips for them through a broker just like we trade in shares through share tips?? Just see what kind of money multiplier it can be for everyone who finds it interesting in reading about these artists. Till now I have my own set of gathering where we all talk and discuss on what share tips to bent on to take my buy or sell decisions, but if my idea fructifies, my own wife would come out even a bigger filmy analyst in determining which artists to trade in. She would just have her own set of share tips on buying this artist or the other. She would say…” Hey, Just go long on Kareena Kapoor, You know she has managed to secure a position in the FILMFARE POWER LIST 2009?? Her share which is currently trading at 350 would jump over to 400, you see?? Just go short on Ranbeer Kapoor, yesterday only I have read in Delhi times that his movie “ANJAANA ANJAANI” has flopped at the Box office”. I don’t think that this share would make a high of 600 his time.”
Isn’t it a good idea?? At least these set of women who have been reading all this stuff without any reason would get a reason to it. And moreover they can generate their own wealth .But all of it depends upon these artists whether they will allow their share tips to be traded on the stock exchange or not??It is still the question unanswered. discovering more about you an agent may feel that you are too
similar to a current client, someting that wasn’t apparent at first
meeting. So, your strategy? Stay in touch and know that you have a
potential agent for the future. Things change, clients leave. When
the time is right, you’ll hear from them.
THE SECOND important thing is - They NEED to know
how to represent you, hire you or cast you! So no matter
what you discuss or chat about you HAVE to get this valuable
information into their consciousness IF you want a successful
follow up relationship.
OK…now comes the APPLES and ORANGES technique.
Every Agent interview I’ve ever experienced and that of
thousands of clients goes something like this:
AGENT’S OPENING LINE:
“So what are doing now?” OR
“What’s happening with you?” OR
“What have you been doing recently?”
It’s a trick question and doesn’t mean LITERALLY
“What are you doing now”?
It means,
“Tell me why I should work with you..in the next minute or so.”
They NEED to know if you are bookable, are you marketable?
are you likeable? Will you come through for them so they can
make that precious 10% if they commit and work hard for YOU.
But most actors answer the question literally. BIG MISTAKE!- Unless
you are currently starring in a Broadway show, just booked a major
film, just got cast in a network commercial that will earn you big
bucks – you get the picture.
So what do you say if you haven’t got recent major credits?
Let’s start with the DON’T's-
Example #1:
AGENT: What are you doing now?
ACTOR: Um, nothing. It’s been slow.
Example #2:
AGENT: What are you doing now?
ACTOR: Uh, I’m in class and…um, I have a job at a bar.
Example #3:
AGENT: What are you doing now?
ACTOR: I was an extra in the new Oliver Stone movie and I did a
short scene in a 10 minute Student film a few weeks ago.
All of which will NOT get ANY professional interested in you. It
doesn’t tell them that you will be successful or know how to
run your career effectively OR what parts you can play,
get cast in or that ANYONE else thinks well enough of you to
cast you in anything major!
Did you ever see an agent smile with a blank look on their face
and say sweetly,“Really nice to meet you…let me know
when you’re IN something.” ?
This is their friendly attempt to get you to LEAVE. They don’t want
to offend you, they realize you aren’t ready for an agent, aren’t
getting work on your own and want them to do all the heavy work of
selling you without making any money for the effort.OF COURSE
THEY WANT YOU TO GET OUT OF THEIR OFFICE.
Now, let’s flip it…when you hear the classic line,
What are you doing now?”(APPLES), answer ORANGES.
So, instead of answering the absolute boring truth you answer
YOUR truth, YOUR story.
Tell them about your type, your passion, your most successful
portrayal, the most exciting audition you ever had.Tell them a story
they will enjoy hearing. You are accomplishing two things-
showing them who you really are and entertaining them- that you
are a brilliant actor who can sell himself. It’s not always important
that you have major credits from two weeks or two months ago.
It’s important that they can rely on you to MAKE your career
successful. It’s your SPIRIT and INTENTION that will get them on board.
Some of the DO’s.
Example #1:
AGENT (APPLES): What are you doing now?
ACTOR (ORANGES): I’m very pro-active, submit myself all the time
and I’m developing a fun,new webisode with a few really good actors
who are friends.I play a character just like Tina Fey from 30 ROCK-
I wrote it as well and we’re even looking for sponsors to promote it
and make it very financially successful. I THINK WE FOUND OUR
FIRST ONE. There’s a budget! And that Indy film I shot a few months
ago is headed for Sundance! I’m excited! The performances are so
good – it might win an award. I played a quirky nurse in a starring role
and it was an absolute hoot! The director wants to cast me in his
next feature.
(very few agents could resist an actor who might be seen at
Sundance or who created a project that might make $ $ and that a
film director wants to hire you again!)
Example #2:
AGENT (APPLES): What are you doing now?
ACTOR (ORANGES): Auditioning like crazy and by the way I study
with Blah-blah, who I think is the best in the business- his students
include Ed Norton, Demi-Moore, Sean Penn…(name 3-4 prominent
actors/movie stars/b’way stars). My career is on a path like theirs!
And I’m consistently building my network of Top A list Casting
Directors- just last week I met the CD’s from White Collar /
LAW & Order-LA! They think I’m perfect for this undercover cop role.
I play a lot of those.
(Most agents would be thrilled that you count yourself in the same
circle as major movie stars as far as your training and that you
are making an effort to meet all the top CD’s so you WILL
work on major shows).
Example #3:
AGENT (APPLES: What are you doing now?
ACTOR (ORANGES): When I got cast in the Oliver Stone film I was
excited to play a featured role- got a chance to meet him
and talk to him! And I’m shooting a really great film script
with a young director (some say he is the next Steven Soderberg)
next week. It’s a new genre for him- romantic comedy and he
thinks I’m his perfect romantic heroine!
(Agents are very pleased when you keep working on projects
with potential up and coming directors or that you’ve met
a major film producer/director. If you were really only an extra
in a crowd scene with 100 other people,then DON’T mention the
Oliver Stone film but talk about the great work you did in the
smaller project that has potential to be very successful.)
Talking ORANGES : Never lie or boast. Just be passionate and
excited about your experiences. See the potential in everything
and express yourself uber-optimistically. It’s not cool to be cool.
Agents have to see the potential and will misconstrue the “laid-back”
for the “loser”. So, be a winner! Happy Oranges, Mangoes, Strawberries!

THE FIRST important thing is that you are there because they are INTERESTED in you!
A client recently asked me naively if her offers to have 3 agent meetings were because they were just being “polite”. No, they were not being polite. No one has time to waste going through the process of interviewing you or making you drive there, park (pay for a cab or a bus) and spend 10-30 minutes for no reason! If after a meeting you do not get a response such as an offer for signed representation, a follow up meeting so both parties can be “sure” or at the very least an offer of free-lance representation, then you are doing something WRONG! You are not creating the most positive presentation or you are not giving them the right information-i.e that you are a winner and will book a lot of work! There was a dis-connect somewhere.
The exception to this? Sometimes after speaking with you and discovering more about you an agent may feel that you are too similar to a current client, something that wasn’t apparent at first meeting. So, your strategy? Stay in touch and know that you have a potential agent for the future. Things change, clients leave. When the time is right, you’ll hear from them.

Marketing Tips for Actors – The Ten Myths of Getting Work on a Soap Opera
Myth One: Only pretty people or models can work on Soaps. Wrong. Soaps now hire all sizes, shapes, colors, ages. “Real” people are necessary to portray seventy-five percent of the roles daily – nurses, policemen, attorneys, judges, doctors, boutique owners, journalists…the list goes on.
Myth Two: Regional Accents (New York, Southern, Hispanic, etc) are acceptable. Wrong. Only if the character is specifically from these areas, do you need this kind of accent. Otherwise it would place you out of the location of a Pine Valley, Llanview, Springfield, etc. Get rid of the accent if you want to work.
Myth Three: If you do an extra job once, you’ll never get a contract part.
Wrong. Just the opposite is true. If they get to know you, they will consider you for the recurring and other larger roles. Use the opportunity as an extra or “under-five” player to learn the system, network with the people who work on the show daily and make some money.
Myth Four: Casting Directors hire you for major roles. Wrong. Casting Directors can only hire you for the day player, “under-five” and extra roles, but their input is important for the contract parts. The final decision is up to an executive committee and eventually, the Executive Producer.
Myth Five: Directors hire you. Wrong. Directors are under contract just like actors. Unlike directors in the theater and film (who have the final say), they have little or no input in the casting process for Soap Operas.
Myth Six: You don’t need theater training, only on-camera “Soap” training to do a Soap Opera. Wrong. If you only have a limited budget to spend on training, go for the acting technique or scene study class with the best in the business. You can always learn on- camera technique the first day on the set. It’s easy.
( i.e., an overly dramatic “bad” actor on stage will be a bad actor in front of a camera. As an actor just learn to be truthful and real in whatever media you plan to work).
Myth Seven: If you take a course from a Soap Opera Casting Director, an assistant Casting Director or a daytime executive, you’ll get hired on that show. Wrong. Not only do people still believe this myth, but it’s the major reason they sign up for courses with CD’s.( you might get extra work, but the class won’t help you get a contract role per se).
Myth Eight: When you sign a three year contract, they have to pay you no matter what for three years – you cannot be fired. Wrong. Networks have the option of writing you out with two-months, two-weeks, two-days or two-minutes notice.
Myth Nine: You have to be in the union (AFTRA) to get a job or audition on a Soap Opera. Wrong. Anyone who has training, a picture/resume and the ability to do the work can be auditioned or hired.
Myth Ten: You have to have an agent to get a job on a Soap. Wrong. Eventually, if you’re up for a contract role you’ll need someone, an agent or lawyer, to negotiate your contract. And it will help to have an agent submit you for major contract parts. But you can get extra, under-five, even day player and running parts on your own. Then if they get to know you, you might be brought in for the major roles.

Marketing Tips for Actors- Getting a Great Headshot!
What makes a great headshot?
It’s the simplest thing in the world but most actors get it wrong. And photographers get it wrong and ironically, many headshot photographers working specifically with actors get it wrong.
What’s the secret?
Nothing. Doing nothing. All you have to do is be yourself in front of a camera. Simple. And yet very difficult for most actors who are incredibly SHY when it comes to being themselves. If they can’t focus on being another character- something we all spend years learning to do as actors- then there’s confusion, insecurity, fear and tension which makes for a lousy headshot. Adding to that is the frustration of most photographers I’ve met or worked with who don’t know HOW to get an actor to RELAX. So they say things like “Relax, chill, be more calm, stop biting your lip or squinting your eyes!” or “Relax your forehead-there are lines and wrinkles where you’re frowning, lower your shoulders, breathe!” The list goes on. The result? An actor gets more self-conscious, upset, more nervous and more tense. It’s a downward spiral.
What to do?
Five Easy Steps To a Great Headshot
1- Choose a photographer that YOU feel comfortable with not the “trendy” hot guy to whom every actor goes. (“Oh, if only I had a HEAD SHOT with this top guy I would be successful, too!”) NO, not true.
2- Go over your “type” and range-the kind of roles in which you will be cast and play BEFORE you decide on the wardrobe. There’s nothing worse than a generic headshot, one with an actor dressed in a boring white shirt or a black sweater with a phony smile. Know your roles. Doctor, Lawyer, Businessman, Teacher, Mom, Dad? Dress it or suggest it. Wear your favorite colors-solids are generally better than prints. Another mistake? An actress wearing too much jewlery, make-up or choosing outfits that are more suited to a disco, a beach party, baseball game or just hanging out at a bar. That’s OK if that’s what you’re selling as your brand. If not, casting directors are confused about how to cast you or call you in for a role, so they don’t! (Get the advice of a Career Coach if you don’t know your type or what to wear).
3- Explain thoroughly to the make-up artist and hair stylist EXACTLY how you look every day. All too often a stylist will do your hair they way they see you not the way you usually look so you end up with photos that don’t accurately represent YOU. This is especially true for women but may apply to men with longer hair that can be altered with mousse, spray, a curling iron. For women with curly hair-if that’s how you look don’t straighten your hair just for the headshot unless you want to do that everyday of your life henceforth. Casting Directors want to see the real you not how you “could be”.
4- Bring a CD or several with music you love. Create your own “space” and place within the studio. Bring water or your favorite juice, snack, food. Bring your favorite photos of your pets, children, family or partner so you are thinking about positive images and memories. Focus on just being comfortable.
THEN, take a half hour or even 15 minutes to sit still and just be- yourself. Don’t arrive late and rush into a shoot with the stylist fussing, getting dressed, photographer clicking, lights blinking. All that creates tension. Relax BEFORE you sit in the chair or stool on which you will be photographed.
In my experience with over a dozen top headshot photographers in as many years, the best shots I ever obtained were taken by a photographer who was a part of a husband/wife team. He greeted you at the door and offered refreshments leading you to a peaceful dressing room where you could unwind with soothing music. She sat and talked/laughed with you for a full half hour BEFORE you heard a click from her camera or saw a flash of light from the strobe. Of course they knew lighting and were skilled in the art of photography but their success as a team was understanding the psychology of relaxation and harmony for their actor/clients. Brilliant!
5- Use your acting “technique” while you are being photographed. Think Fun thoughts (your subtext or inner monologue). Talk about your life. Tell a story about your family or your travels.
