You have tried all the possible fairness solutions marketed, from creams to soaps to powders to you name it. They sell, you buy. But to what purpose? Your skin color hasn’t been changing. You simply end up wasting money on a lost cause. And at what cost? These fairness creams use harmuful chemicals that bleach and damage your precious skin. The best advice anyone can give – Give it up.

Why care so much for a lighter skin tone? Especially when research shows that darker skin is actually healthier! The pigment melanin in your skin, that brings the darker color, actually has a number of properties that keeps you healthier than those with lighter skin tone.

Advantages of having darker skin

Photo protection and/or UV filtration- The most important advantage of having large amounts of melanin in the skin is that it protects skin from the damaging impact of the sun. It guards the skin from short-term effects such as severe sunburn. (Though despite melanin, the skin can burn under certain circumstances)
Resistance – Melanin offers resistance to heat or cold, as well as resistance to the activity of inorganic antimicrobial compounds thus improving natural overall health.
Low risk of cancer – Pigmentation has widely been viewed as photo protective largely because darkly pigmented skin is at substantially lower risk of developing skin cancer than is fair skin. Particularly the more common types known as basal and squamous cell skin cancers. The rate of skin cancer among African Americans, though significant, is many times lower than the rate for Whites. In the US some forms of skin cancer are “50 times” higher in Caucasians (lighter-skinned populations\ white people) than in African Americans. Also African Americans have a 13-fold lower incidence of melanoma (malignant tumor) than Caucasians do.
Protects the nervous system – Melanin acts as a free radical scavenger and has been shown to protect against ‘Cryptococcus neoformans’, a parasite of the central nervous system. Interestingly, it is known that Caucasians suffer from heightened rates of many diseases that affect the central nervous system. For example, Huntington’s disease, optic neuritis, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, PKU (Phenylketonuria), Anencephaly and Spinal bifida.
Immunity against diseases – In insects, melanin is known to protect against attack from disease, by engulfing and killing invading micro-organisms. Researchers now suggest that melanin mig ht have the same function in humans. And it might also explain why fair-skinned soldiers in humid jungle environments are three times more likely to contract serious skin diseases than their darker-skinned comrades.
Protection from bacterial infection – Melanin has properties to protect from bacterial infection. This is also believed to be the reason that melanization patterns among different parts of the body is  not just to protect from exposure to sunlight. For example, many parts of the body which are hardly ever exposed to sunlight, such as genitalia, throats and nasal passages are often packed with melanin cells and are hence darker than the rest of the body. They are sensitive areas and require protection from unwanted bacteria.
Makes you Look younger – Melanin has many significant health as well as beauty benefits. It guards our skin from long-term damage associated with aging — like development of deep wrinkles, rough surface texture, and age spots (sometimes called liver spots). Women of color also have the advantage of possessing the naturally warm, glowing skin sought after by white women without having to spend hours tanning the skin at the beach or a tanning salon.

Disadvantages of too much melanin

It can’t all be good. A disadvantage in having more melanin is that it makes our skin more “reactive.” That means almost any stimulus — a rash, scratch, pimple, or inflammation — may trigger the production of excess melanin, resulting in dark marks or patches on the skin.

Actresses proud of being dark

Bipasha Basu is one of the very few stars in Bollywood, who has never had any problem with her looks and appearance. Though dusky, she has never turned to fairness creams to change her skin color. As she herself puts it, “You’ll never find me endorsing especially for fairness creams, because I don’t like the whole penchant for fair skin. I was offered a product endorsement for a fairness cream ages ago, but I declined. In India, dark skinned girls are still subjected to taunts and pity. In the matrimonial columns, people still advertise for a fair bride. I’m dark skinned and very proud of that.”

Nandita Das who has fought the battle between dark and fair skin right from when she entered the industry has never fallen prey to fairness creams. She stands proud of her color and is against the advertisements that propagate fairness products.

At a seminar on Marketing Responsibility, in Mumbai, she said that she found fairness ads extremely demeaning to the character of a woman. She adds “I see women whose color has not changed even after using the cream for ten years and that further affects their self-confidence.”

Konkona Sen Sharma is also dusky and has never used any skin lightening cream or endorsed any such cream. She has always been comfortable with the way she looks.

Dusky is sexy

Past the shops selling mutton and electrical goods, past the children playing on the train tracks and the goats munching quietly on cauliflower leaves, Rafiq Qureshi sits in a dwelling constructed from asbestos sheeting. The place is airless – the power gone – and outside an open gutter gushes with purple dye. People peek in curiously. Qureshi cuts an unhappy figure: unshaven, sleepless, anxious. It has been a difficult week, in which he has moved from the slums, to the newspaper front pages, to the police station. Now he is back where he started.

Qureshi is the father of Rubina Ali – the child actor who starred as the young Latika in Slumdog Millionaire – and last Sunday he was the unlikely subject of the latest sting by News of the World investigative reporter Mazher Mahmood. This is the man who exposed drug-taking by DJs Johnnie Walker and Richard Bacon, and who led to Sophie, Countess of Wessex, giving up her PR job in 2002, after she was recorded saying that, among other fairly strident views, she considered William Hague “deformed”. In an extensive article, Mahmood wrote that he had heard that Qureshi would consider “the highest offer for his child”, and that the newspaper had then decided to approach him, masquerading as “a wealthy Arab princess from Dubai and the middle man negotiating for her”. Suggesting that the husband of the “princess” was an Arab sheik who wanted to adopt Rubina and take her to live with him, Mahmood wrote that Qureshi had agreed to sell his daughter for £200,000.

The fallout from the story was quick and brutal. With the world’s media descending on Garib Nagar – “the city of the poor” – where Qureshi and his family live, cameras caught Rubina’s estranged mother, Khurshida, and her stepmother, Munni, grappling, tugging each other’s hair, hands reaching for each other’s throats. Khurshida also reported her former husband to the police, leading to him first being questioned, then released without charge.

Carmen’s talents were evident when she was a child, as she was to attend the School for Creative and Performing Arts at only nine years old. In school, Carmen began taking singing lessons and practicing her vocal talents. By her teen years, she was performing in musicals (as a dancer) and doing her own choreographies. Her ultimate ambition was to go to Los Angeles and sign a record deal. By the age of fifteen, Carmen was well on her way to realizing her dream. Carmen then moved to Minneapolis, where she lived with her sister, and worked as a clothes model for Target department stores.

In 1992, soon after meeting and auditioning for Prince, she was signed to his Paisley Park Records label. Prince took Carmen under his wing, describing her as “this new girl out of Cincinnati.” Her first album coincided with her opening slot on the European leg of Prince’s Diamonds And Pearls Tour. She was promoted with ads in Rolling Stone and on MTV. However large the hype, the success wasn’t there. The video for the single, “Go-Go Dancer”, shot in March 1992, received very little airplay on MTV, and only the small Video Jukebox Network played the song.

A 12″ single of “Go-Go Dancer” hit the stores in June, but didn’t sell well as no one was interested apart from a couple of Prince fans who had the hardest time even finding the album in shops. By that time, her album was finished, and promotional advance cassette copies and bios were sent out for review purposes to members of the press. However, it was all in vain. The album was delayed, and it was decided that it needed additional tracks and remixing before it was released. This wasn’t Prince’s decision, as often has been thought, but actually Warner Bros. top executive Benny Medina’s. Medina had seen Carmen on some of the shows on the Diamonds And Pearls Tour and hadn’t liked what he’d seen. He then approached Prince during a sound check and expressed his doubts about Carmen’s qualities. The album was finally released at a later date, but did not meet expectations. It seemed Carmen Electra’s career had just gone the same way the careers of so many of Prince’s other protégé(e)s — male and female — had gone: down the dumpster.

From 1993-1995, Carmen Electra was a forgotten name. Just another pretty face with no talent was the public’s feeling. Carmen’s career seemed to be on the rocks until she got a boost when she appeared on the Nickelodeon show “All That”, got a boob job.

Carmen’s career was in danger of vanishing, so she made her clothes disappear instead. In March of 1996, Carmen took a huge step forward and posed nude for Playboy. She also performed in a video for Playboy, “Playboy Cheerleaders”, in which she sings the show stopper, “2-4-6-8″. Also in 1996, she co-hosted MTV’s Loveline and occasionally appeared as a dancer at Prince’s Glam Slam clubs.

Carmen’s career was revived on October 4, 1996 when Lisa Berger, MTV’s senior vice president original programming and series development, announced that Carmen would take over from Jenny McCarthy (also a Playboy veteran) as Chris Hardwick’s co-host on MTV’s dating show “Singled Out” starting February 10, 1997, for at least 65 episodes.

Carmen joined Jenny on-air for one week in February as Jenny prepared to depart to star in her own series on MTV, which also debuted in February 1997.

Lisa Berger said “Singled Out has been an enormous success for MTV, and we are thrilled to take it into its fourth season. Chris’ witty sense of humor matched with the sex appeal and outrageousness of Jenny — and then Carmen — will make this the most exciting season of the show yet. Carmen is a perfect fit for “Singled Out” and exactly the type of personality the show needs for Chris’ new co-host. She’s talented, sexy and smart and a welcome addition to the show’s cast.”

In January 1997, the New York Daily News announced Carmen was going to replace Pamela Lee on Baywatch. Carmen had occasionally appeared on the spin-off Baywatch Nights, so the news wasn’t too surprising. In April 1997, the story was proved true and Carmen had been given a five-year contract to replace Pamela’s character on Baywatch.

In March 1997, Carmen appears in cartoon form as the model for a character who’s a singer and a vampire in a comic book series called Embra. Her heritage is Irish, German, and Cherokee. Carmen once worked as a dancer at Kings Island Amusement Park in Ohio.

In one corner, Asiya Andrabi, the leader of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, the Kashmiri women’s morality brigade, a woman so committed to Kashmiri separatism that her sons are already pledged as martyrs to the cause. In the other, the Bollywood star Bipasha Basu, a woman whose first name means “fetterless, unbound”, and whose sultry films have lived up to that billing.

In a move that has critics intrigued and Kashmiri separatists appalled, the actor is to play Andrabi in the film Lamhaa, which seeks to dissect the Kashmiri Muslim movement in India.

Andrabi is unimpressed. “I will not tolerate any Bollywood actor playing my role,” she told the Guardian. She sent a legal notice to the hotel in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, where the film crew were staying last week, indicating her intention to take action. The film unit had left the city but Andrabi is not easily deterred.

“If I find the film objectionable, I’ll take legal action to shut it down,” she said.

The stand-off is the latest and most improbable confrontation in the long struggle between Muslims in Kashmir’s idyllic Srinagar valley and the Indian government.

The two women could not be more different. Andrabi, 45, set up Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of the Nation) in 1981 after graduating in biology and biochemistry. In public, she only appears fully veiled and covered.

She has spent years in jail, and her most recent incarceration was during Kashmir’s state assembly elections last month. Her husband has also been imprisoned for his part in the Kashmiri separatist movement and they have named one of their two sons Muhammad bin Qasim, after the Indian subcontinent’s first Muslim invader.

When not campaigning on the streets of Srinagar, Andrabi teaches Arabic and Islam to girls, and believes the world is divided into two “nations”, Muslim and non-Muslim.

Basu has been one of Bollywood’s most coveted sex symbols since her debut film in 2001, and has an altogether more liberal approach to dress and deportment.

Ben Kingsley is said to have hailed her as “India’s Sophia Loren”. She was “flattered” when Richard Gere described her on Indian television as “sexy and hot”, has featured in steamy scenes on screen and was photographed kissing footballer Cristiano Ronaldo at a party in Lisbon. Her boyfriend is John Abraham, another Bollywood sex symbol.

Both women have had their brushes with controversy. Andrabi first made news when her burka-clad followers went round Srinagar tarring film posters showing women less covered than themselves.

She has conducted other aggressive campaigns against women and even schoolgirls appearing unveiled on the streets, against cyber cafes and restaurants frequented by young couples, against liquor shops and prostitution and even against dowries.

Basu’s headline-grabbing escapades belong to a different genre. A well-known Mumbai plastic surgeon once alleged the Bollywood star had not paid him for breast implants (she denied having implants). Public uproar led her to blame the Ronaldo kiss on an “out of context” photograph and after failing to show up in time for an India Day parade in New Jersey, Basu alleged she was “harassed mentally and physically” by two men escorting her to the event.

But like Loren, Basu also aspires to recognition as a serious actor.

This is what got her into Lamhaa, directed by Rahul Dholakia, whose debut feature, Parzania, was a highly acclaimed film set amid horrific anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat.
