Reading The L Word

Nothing like an academic deconstruction to justify an obsession with a product of pop culture and add to the fun. Because the show is created by lesbians, writers who critique the show in terms of lesbian values are performing an exercise akin to shooting a target in a hall of mirrors. They end up putting their own values up for criticism.

The main complaint is that The L Word enforces heteronormity, that is, its main characters live their lives very much like straight couples do, enforcing monogamy, a nuclear family structure and displaying ethical values that anyone would uphold, in fact more so than most straight shows on cable TV. As the discussion unrolls over whether The L Word is representative of the lesbian community or not, one thought does arise. The Lesbian Nation is dead. All those lesbiatopia ideas that were nurtured in the lesbian community when we were outlaws are not represented in The L Word because, in the course of being mainstreamed, those ideas withered. The separatist, egalitarian, Marxist constructs that were meant to blow away the limitations of traditional family and work structures are not even a history in this show. That is the price we paid for acceptance and integration.

What is dynamically queer on The L Word, as one writer points out, is The Chart, a prop kept by one of the characters depicting who slept with whom that gives the lesbian community a six degrees of separation intimacy that happens to ring true. While the show is accused of enforced monogamy, The Chart shows that these characters really aren’t, especially by the 4th season. As the show matured it was able to pull in more "radical" aspects of lesbian identity, showing sex scenes with strap-on dildos even.

Much is also made of the characters being too femme and the butch characters being "in betweeners"—not butch enough. They are trying for more butch characters in season four and even a transitional female to male character, but their bias for a feminine beauty is sabotaging these efforts. Thus the show will always be accused of pandering to the male audience and it is what keeps it from being quite real, but I still appreciate the eye candy. One writer did rise above the issue to point out that the relationships between the characters are still very real and thus our stories are being told despite the pressure to deliver to a broader audience in order to keep the show on the air.

Another writer points out that, with all the glamour on the show, the new generation of lesbians will not escape the pressure that their straight peers suffer around body image. She states that the lesbian ideal of buff bodies wearing gender bending clothing has succumbed to the style-conscious lipstick-lesbian aesthetic. I can’t say that buff bodies were the norm in the lesbian community. Quite the opposite; the community sheltered the right of women to be as fat as they ended up being, on the principle that they should not have to be oppressed by the cultural pressure to be thin (and rich and beautiful). I dare not even speak of this for fear of being called a traitor and strung up and quartered. Meanwhile, there remains an underlying closeted consciousness in the community that if you expect to get laid you better do your time at the gym. So, where Queer As Folk often had their gay male characters together at the gym talking while working out, there has been only one fitness related scene on The L Word in the form of a basketball challenge.

Towards the end of the book, it is noted in a discussion of race representation, that if the show attempted to be less white it would not be real. (It would look like Star Trek or The Mod Squad.) But there was much objection to the Latina character of Carmen being so nice in that Sidney Poitier sense of having to be perfect. Carmen ends up being one of the favorites on the show because she is so nice. It is also noted that the race issues that Jennifer Beals brings to the show in requesting that her character be biracial is remarkable. There are, as yet, no Asian characters, unless you count an unlabeled biracial actress passing as "interesting looking". I kind of dread any depiction of an Asian character because Asian women are so closely associated with the sex trade, thus this territory is a landmine in this context. Asian lesbians are not that well integrated in the gay community, anyway, which was why they formed their own with the group Queer N’Asian. I was never drawn to it. I have too many issues to juggle as it is.

Despite the uneven writing and the unceremonial dispensing of characters that seem to reflect backstage squabbles more than plot, if I have any complaints about The L Word, it is that every season the characters become more traditionally successful, thus more rich, more Hollywood, more celebrity like and their wardrobe reflects this. Soon it will be like watching Dallas. Dykes do have a style of their own, but Prada is not the designer.

I finally have a shot of the inside of one of my favorite diners and works of architecture. This is in my opinion the zenith of Morphosis as it existed with Thom Mayne and Michael Rotondi. I understand this structure to be the energy release for earthquake movement. This ring comes to a point at the floor. On the right, in the yellow wall are photos of the actress Andie Macdowell, whom I understand was here during construction for a fashion shoot.

Not a great shot, but the light in here is fantastic. This is an old 1950′s bank, cut open to admit light from many different areas, the skylight, the block wall to the East, and along the outer edges of the ceiling as you can see along the middle third of the image on the right side.
The scene with Deniro and Pacino in ‘Heat’ was filmed in this diner. Anyone know about the boxing mural?
